Lamentations is a haunting memorial to the communities of Eastern Europe destroyed in the Holocaust, and to the magnificent and diverse wooden synagogues in which they prayed. Although once there were hundreds of these synagogues, not one remains standing today.
Leonid Gorban has reproduced interior and exterior views of these charming 17th- and 18th-century buildings through exquisitely detailed wood engravings. The images are complemented by the text of the Biblical Book of Lamentations — commemorating the destruction of Jerusalem — printed in a letter-form designed especially for this book and written out in hand calligraphy by David Moss.
